In the Gobi Desert, a majestic sand castle-like formation rose majestically out of the flat, barren landscape; a sudden rise of burnt-orange sandstone in the middle of a sea of taupe sand that stretched otherwise uninterrupted, seemingly into oblivion. The Flaming Cliffs, also known as Bayanzag by the locals, drew us not only because of their natural beauty, but also because of their history of hidden treasures. Although a 1922 expedition to the region led by the adventurous scientist Roy Chapman Andrews (who is rumored to have been the inspiration for Indiana Jones) failed to unearth any new information about the origins of humans, their search did unearth a plethora of fossils hidden within the cliffs of the region.

One of the expedition's most significant discoveries was a nest of dinosaur eggs. This was the first discovery of its kind (at least by outsiders), and it shed light on the process by which dinosaurs reproduced. Since then, numerous paleontological and geological discoveries have been made throughout the country, with the Gobi sandstone in particular being particularly well-preserved.
